Night at the Marketplace

We swing by the bungalow for a nap, then when we wake up, we head back to the Marketplace. We’re already well into the night — the nights fall fast in Selvadorada — and the Marketplace has metamorphosed.
No longer soaked in the burning sunlight, the place now relies on the billion fairylights hanging around the place. It was colorful and pleasing to see this morning — now it’s pure magic.

Hannah and I head back to the food stall, and we try something new.

This time when we check out the stalls, we don’t necessarily go for the survival gear. Hannah buys three typical Selvadoradan ragdolls for Cleo and Cyril.

Gotta work on my culture. Yerba Mate for the energy, Horchata because I loved the taste. They’re actually okay together.
Jungle Dangers

With this new curse following her around, Hannah has a hard time finding joy in her exploration. She’s gloomy and frustrated, but she’s not about to let a pesky curse stop her from fulfilling her Selvadoradan goals.

The night is falling — and it seems this is the hour that the dangers of the jungle awake. A swarm of bees take an interest in me, but by standing very still, I manage to persuade them that I am no danger to them, and they leave me alone.

Once they’re gone, I shout to Hannah to beware — but she’s already looking around. She heard something.

And sure enough, she’s suddenly surrounded by the endemic electric fireflies.

And one of them stings her, sending a shock through her whole body.

She’s stunned, but thankfully, we purchased a Faraday soda from the vendor’s stall at the marketplace. It will ease the symptoms of electrocution. I throw it to her and she takes a thankful sip.

Not now, mosquitoes. We’re both about done with insects by now.
The First Door

In search for information, we go inside the bar, where we meet the owner. She’s a very classy woman, and she’s incredibly friendly.
She asks us where we’re from, what we know about the country, and generally makes conversation. Hannah leads most of it for me. She explains her childhood dream was always to explore new places, and that Selvadorada was at the top of the list.
“Ha,” the owner says. “So… you will be looking for the Hidden Temple, I suppose?”

“… Tell us more.”
I did bring us here to let Hannah fulfill her exploration dreams, but I didn’t find any information on a hidden temple; now not only are we both intrigued, we have a goal.

I take the time to change into a more appropriate outfit, then we head to the edge of a jungle. There’s an archway that signals the start of a forgotten path, but it’s blocked by branches and vines. I’m not about to let my sixteen-year-old daughter struggle with a machete, so I send her exploring elsewhere.
“I got this,” I tell her, confident.
This is when twenty years of building muscle through yoga is going to come in handy.

Hannah doesn’t idle about while I get to work on the branches. She founds a suspicious spot and immediately takes out chisel and hammer, and gets digging.

A thorough, rigorous explorer who takes pictures of every discovery stage worth capturing. The sun emerges from behind a cloud just in time for her to take a good shot.

And as the sun touches it, I put the last strike to my machete work, and the first door opens
Throwback
As Cyril, Cleo and Hannah have all aged up, we’re moving on to the fourth era soon. It’s the last era pre-Seasons, and also the last before Hannah turns into an adult and Azalea passes the torch of legacy heir to her daughter.
So I just want to stop there a moment and share some more of the family shots I took during their trip to Granite Falls. I hope you like them ❤

Disappointment

Turns out the food was meh.
So Hugo and I decide to go for a good ol’ classic, and Hannah gets to eat her authentic, tasty food.
At a Spice Market stall.
She’s an adventurous soul whose eyes shine as she discovers the lights and colors her dad and I knew as home. She wants to try the whole menu, but we have already eaten after all.
On the way home, she says this was her best birthday yet.
The Restaurant

The day of Hannah’s fifteenth birthday, we head, at her request, to the Shang Simlan restaurant that has recently opened in the Spice District.
It’s actually on top of the karaoke bar Hugo and Shanna fought to save. And it worked! The first floor was renovated and turned into this beautiful place that Hugo and I have also been able to try.
Hannah’s request to go eat there is not motivated by Spice Market nostalgia: she just wants to discover tastes from another side of the world. She’s super excited to try dumplings — and not the kind you can find in food stalls Uptown. She saw Lily Feng try them out and recoil once, and ever since she’s want to get the authentic taste.

They did an incredible renovation here. This used to be a sad, empty space.

The hostess receives us with a warm smile. We’ve made the opening, and apparently we’re the very first clients!

Hannah is thrilled that she’ll now have the same birthday as what she is sure will become her favorite place to eat. She chats with the host about every possible simlan food-related thing she can think of, while the rest of us are already going through the menu.

It all looks so appetizing! We agree on a big family meal with a bit of everything.

And then we wait for the food to come, taking in the beautiful atmosphere of this new Spice Market spot.
The Angler

Hugo goes straight back to his favorite Granite Falls hobby. He missed it, apparently, but he didn’t lose the touch he acquired last time.

Before long he catches a fish, and he cooks it outside on the grill, with a touch of lime and, more importantly, without burning the house down.

And it’s actually really, really good. Again, never before has Hannah had the chance to eat something fresh; and it doesn’t get fresher than that.

Though both Hannah and I could have done without her slob of a dad burping his heart out at the dinner table, no matter how good the food was or how proud he might have been…

It’s okay Hugo, I still love you, you disgusting sim you.
Return to Granite Falls

Here we are again, back where we went on our honeymoon, It’s every bit as beautiful as we remember.

And this time, we’re not alone! We came back as a family.
Hannah discovers a whole new environment — and we’re both glad she gets a chance to finally see something that is neither concrete nor glass.
And she has the cutest little hat for the chilly Granite Falls morning.

Hugo’s thrilled to be able to share this place we love with our daughter.
Nounou is not entirely convinced about this weird new environment, and isn’t quite ready to leave my shoulder.

The Musicians

This, I hear through Shanna and Marie. They tell me that Marie holds zero grief against me or Hugo, but she spends all of her time with Romain, and Romain will have nothing to do with us.
On the other side of San Myshuno, Romain and Marie have a singing duo that’s struggling to get heard. They do opening nights in Brindleton Bay and Windenburg, but they’re still a long way away from the shadow of a song on the radio.
It’s not for lack of trying. They spend most of their time writing, training, and recording, though it would seem they do not always agree on the process or the product.

And it’s harder to focus with a tiny little toddler who’ll just decide to wreak havoc from time to time.

When little William has a fit, it’s often Marie who picks him up.
It’s not that Romain doesn’t care for the kid, Shanna explains, diplomatic as ever. But their lack of success is getting to him, and the more time passes, the angrier he gets, and the angrier he gets, the less he wants to be around William.

In short, Charlotte intervenes, Marie has to be the grown-up.

There are worse places to be struggling artists.
Marie and Romain are renting a loft in the Arts District, but most of the rent comes from old family money, both the Barcet and the Stewarts. Which, it would seem, only angers Romain more.

Romain and Marie are both always waiting for the big break — so their phones are always turned on.

So when Marie receives a call that makes her heart speed up, she can’t wait to tell Romain.

Who just walked into the living-room, but for the sole purpose of complaining about the noise William is making.

“How am I supposed to practice? Can’t he stop being so loud?”
“Rom, he’s a kid, kids are always going to be loud.”

“Listen, you have to take a break anyway, I just got some news and you’ll want to hear it!”

“It’s a producer. He saw our video on SimTube, and he wants me to work on an album for his label!”

“Wait, you? As in only you?”

“But we’re a duo! That’s absolute bullshit.”
“I thought you’d be happy for me.”
From what I hear, Romain and Marie have more than one issue to work through.
